All my life I've never suffered any illnesses. I've travelled half way round the world, doing the work I love, problem solving. But since my diagnosis of cancer a year ago I found I could not solve my own problems. When I was first invited to Dorothy House I was a bit doubtful, but since attending the Day Care Support Group I have found comfort from the volunteers, staff and drivers, and I've made friends with other people in the same boat. It has been a comfort to share experiences and feelings with others who have encountered similar treatments. I have planned extra help as I have needed it and even planned and paid for my own funeral. I can even talk about this now without crying.
People outside are sympathetic but don't really understand, not having had similar experiences. The comfort from talking to people at Dorothy House from all different walks of life has been an encouragement. I've seen someone arrive on his first day and could see from his facial expression that he was mentally shattered and unable to comprehend what had happened to him. Then on about the third visit he was able to talk freely to the group and express his feelings openly.
